Welcome to the PropellerSeller.com Lightspeed Zulu 3 Review. We will explain some of the features and give you our thoughts of the product.

Features Explained

Active Noise Reduction

ANR increases the effective noise attenuation of a headset when turned on, in addition to the headsets natural passive noise attenuation. When turned on a microphone, typically placed on the outside of ear-cup, picks up ambient noise. That information is transmitted to the headset’s electronics which drive a speaker inside the ear-cup, to produce a noise that is the exact mirror image of the original noise. In other words the trough of one sound wave (the noise caused by the propeller) corresponds to the crest of another (the antiphase created by the headset). The noise and antiphase noise cancel each other out.

Audio

The Bluetooth interface allows you to connect to your peripheral navigation devices, such as ForeFlight or SkyDemon as well as taking calls or listening to music from your phone.

Lightspeed ComPriority: means you’ll never miss important radio communications, which lowers the volume of any auxiliary device automatically during radio or intercom transmissions. The soft mute feature brings back music in a natural way for easy listening.: lets you mute an audio signal when receiving a communication, or mix the two together.

The Dual Aperture Disc microphone provides greater noise cancellation for clearer, more intelligible communications. Exclusive, user-adjustable mic gain helps balance loud and soft voices in a multi-headset environment.

Cable In-Line

New cables built around a Kevlar core are stronger and more flexible than standard cables, while weighing less.

Lightspeed’s Auto Shutoff feature saves battery life by automatically shutting down the headset power when not in use. The batteries are located in the slim in-line control module which also controls all additional functions of the headset.

Additional

Headset weights in at 410 g and there is a seven-year transferable limited warranty which covers parts, labour and return delivery expenses for non-abuse malfunctions, nice to know.

New, contoured ear seals are designed to hug the curve of the jaw and they do a good job. This reduces the side pressure required to get a good seal leading to a natural fit for more comfort. With 20% more surface area than other models, the new ear seals create a better seal so they work better than ever with glasses.

Made almost entirely of stainless steel and magnesium with rugged cables built around a Kevlar core the Zulu 3 headset feel very good in the hand. the headset has a low-profile stainless steel headband that follows the curve of the head well and feels very sturdy whilst not being overly heavy.

Zulu 3 delivers great active noise reduction (ANR) performance over a broad range of low frequency noise, whilst the magnesium ear cups are block out high frequency noise effectively. Connecting your phone via Bluetooth is no more arduous than usual with this technology and the connection strength is solid. Hearing your GPS navigation software such as ForeFlight or SkyDemon directly is great to increase situational awareness and for picking up any alerts if you stray from your intended routing. Additionally you can record incoming and outgoing communications with Lightspeed’s free app, a nice feature.

The Lightspeed Zulu 3 uses two standard AA batteries. Battery life depends on how much you are using the headsets, if you are using the Bluetooth feature it will use batteries a bit faster. There is a battery indicator that tells you when the batteries are getting low. If the AA batteries die, the headsets will still work as normal passive noise headsets. You will not get the active noise cancellation functionality or Bluetooth feature, you will still be able to transmit and receive.
